By living with a family and attending school in the United States, AYA students improve their English skills. They experience the American educational system—significantly different from their own country's— often finding American schools more flexible with more extracurricular activities. Some students may never have experienced taking an active part in planning and selecting courses to fulfill their particular educational goals. AYA enables exchange students to grow and become more independent, yet at the same time have the support and supervision of a family environment.

Students
from other countries have many reasons for wanting to participate in
a cultural exchange program. They have been exposed to the United States
through newspapers, books, radio, television, internet and films. They
are interested in experiencing the real United States. Or they
simply want to experience life outside their home country.
