Academic year, fall or spring semester Spanish
language program
 |
The Olympic Village
in Barcelona |
Spain offers much more than bullfighting, flamenco dancing and
hillside villages – the culture also encompasses medieval monuments,
delicious food, a spirited night life and historical architecture.
Students are placed with carefully selected host families and attend
a local public high school, where they will become integrated into
the Spanish way of life and culture.
A visa is required for this program. Additional information will
be included with the application.
Who can apply?
Students ages 15-18 years old. Minimum two years of Spanish instruction
and overall "C" GPA required for all three
sessions (fall and spring semesters and academic year).

Program location
Students are most likely to be placed in Logroño, Leon, Gijon, Barcelona,
Alicante, Balear and Canary Islands or Cadiz. If students are placed
in Catalonia, Basque Country or Galicia, they should be aware that
besides Castilian, another language is also spoken there: Catalan,
Basque or Gallego, respectively. Living in a small country where four languages
are spoken will be an enriching and challenging cultural experience
—and also a great opportunity to learn more about Spain’s varied
languages.
Schools
AYA students attend secondary schools as follows:
3° ESO - Grade 9
4° ESO - Grade 10
1° Bachillerato - Grade 11
2° Bachillerato - Grade 12
In ESO, all subjects are compulsory, and the students of a course
are always in the same class. In Bachillerato, students are separated,
as they are specialized in their University interest. All Bachillerato
students will take Spanish, a foreign language, Philosophy, Physical
Education, a study hall plus 4-5 other subjects of their choosing.
The school timetable is generally from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., then from
3 p.m.-5 p.m. Most of the students eat lunch with their host family,
but some have lunch at school.
Accommodations
Students live with a Spanish host family that has been carefully
