From the Amazonian rainforests in the west to the white sand beaches
on the coast to the mountains in the south, Brazil offers a great
diversity of scenery. Like its landscape, the people of Brazil are
varied as well, but you can count on them to be a friendly and warm
people, open to other nationalities. You can experience this for
yourself as you live with a Brazilian host family and attend classes
at a local high school.
A visa is required for this program. The necessary paperwork will
be sent to you after host family placement.
Who can apply?
Students 15-18 years old. An overall “C” GPA is required for all
programs. No previous knowledge of Portuguese is required for this
program. Graduating seniors are eligible.

Courses
Almost all participants will take the required subjects: Portuguese
language, Brazilian literature, Mathematics, Geography, History,
Chemistry, Physics, Biology and English. A 10-hour intensive Portuguese
language course will be provided to all participants during their
first month in Brazil.
Accommodations
Students stay with a volunteer Brazilian host family that has been
carefully selected by our partner program.
Fee
Academic year: $4,700
Fall or spring semester: $4,100
Fee includes:
- $500 application fee
- Round trip airfare between New York, NY, and Rio de
Janeiro
- Pre-departure orientation in the U.S. (see page 16) and
orientation in host community
- Placement with a Brazilian host family, including full
board & lodging
- Placement in a local high school
- Medical insurance
- 24-hour supervision and/or local representative assistance
- 10-hour intensive Portuguese course
- Arrival airport transfer in home community
Not included
- Spending money
- Registration fees and other school costs (including uniforms,
books, activities and sports)
- Visa and passport processing fees
- Domestic roundtrip airfares between hometown and New York, NY
- Domestic roundtrip airfares abroad from arrival city to host
family community
- Brazilian Identification Card (currently about $50)
- Airport departure taxes
Credits
Transfer of credits is not guaranteed. Students must check with
their high school advisor.
