Local representative (where applicable)
During the course of your stay overseas, you will be counseled by
a local representative. Your local representative is responsible
for meeting and interviewing your prospective host family. He or
she is a person in whom you can confide.
If you have any problems or if you need advice, your local representative
will be there to help 24 hours a day. Local representatives are
carefully screened by AYA’s overseas partners. If you can
not reach your local representative, do not hesitate to call the
main program office.
Orientation in the U.S. (included in fee)
Before students depart, an AYA Local Coordinator will conduct an
orientation for those on summer, semester and full year programs.
Topics that will be covered include: culture shock, AYA rules, overseas
customs, regulations and AYA insurance. Orientations will be conducted
on the phone or in person, depending on the locality of the AYA
Local Coordinator.
Spending money
You are advised to bring $200-$400 of spending money for each month
of the program. The amount you will need will vary depending on
your personal tastes and spending habits. If you are on a semester
or academic year program, we suggest putting your money in a bank
in your homestay community. Having your own credit card is recommended
as well.
Credits
Transfer of overseas credits is not guaranteed. It is the responsibility
of the student to find out if their school will accept the foreign
credits and curriculum before program departure. The AYA office
will not be able to assist you with questions about credits once
you have departed for your program.
Please note: European high schools are very strict, and if students
do not attend school on a regular basis, credits may not be awarded.
Dates
Program dates may vary. Like the U.S., schools in Europe have different
starting dates, as semester schedules are region-specific. Flexibility
is a must for all students applying.
School (where applicable)
AYA expects students to take school seriously and to actively participate
in class. Language difficulties should not discourage you. Patience
and practice will quickly improve your language skills. Your teachers
and/or local representative will gladly assist you in finding the
right class level and right courses. Remember, you are an ambassador
representing our country, and it is important you act appropriately.
It is the student’s responsibility to pay for transportation
to and from school (where applicable). Generally, students will
ride the bus, train, or tram or walk to school. Daily costs will vary.
Visas
A visa may be required for your program. Please read the program
information carefully. If required, visa details will be mailed
to you.
Visits
Visits by friends and relatives during the academic year are greatly
discouraged and should be limited to the end of the academic semester
and/or year.
