An AYA local coordinator with her studentLocal Coordinators touch the lives of those around them. The most satisfying aspects of this position are the prestige and recognition that go hand in hand with being part of AYA, an internationally respected academic exchange program.

Beyond this, you, as a Local Coordinator, play an important role because you can make a difference:

  • in your community by promoting an appreciation for the richness and diversity of our world and its people.
  • in the lives of foreign exchange students and their host families by establishing rewarding relationships that last a lifetime.
  • in the world, by increasing understanding of the United States, its people, culture and history, among young people from around the world.

Our Local Coordinators are located in communities across the United States and assist AYA by finding qualified families to serve as host to our visiting international students. Local Coordinators oversee the host family application and interview process, which helps to determine which families are most suitable for the program. Local Coordinators also keep in regular contact with the student and host family throughout the year to monitor and resolve any issues that may arise.

The most successful Local Coordinators have a sincere desire to learn about other people. They are people who are at ease when talking with their friends, family and community members about cross-cultural exchange. Successful Local Coordinators are self-starters who gain satisfaction from working with people.
