Academic Year in America

Host a Foreign Exchange Student

Why Host with AYA

AYA Host families have:

  • the Cultural Activity Fund of $300 a year to reduce the cost of taking your student to cultural events during their stay in the U.S.
  • the opportunity to have a rewarding intercultural learning experience in their own home.
  • their choice of student – AYA allows each host family the opportunity to choose a carefully screened student who will best match their family.
  • scholarships toward selected travel and study abroad programs for their own family in addition to travel credits.
  • host families provide students with a home, bed, meals and support. AYA students bring money for their own expenses and school lunches. They also have full medical insurance.

Host Family Travel Credit Program

AYA hopes that host families will maintain friendships with their foreign exchange student after the students have returned home. In a further effort to promote international exchange, AYA offers an option to host families who have hosted for two or more consecutive semesters or years.

  • Families who host AYA semester students in consecutive years can receive a travel credit of $125 (for the second student hosted only)
  • Families who host AYA full-year students in consecutive years can receive a travel credit of $250 (for the second student hosted only)

Travel credits are to be used toward the cost of a round-trip airline ticket to the country of any student hosted. Travel credits have no cash value. Credits expire one year after the second student departs the United States.  Certain restrictions apply.

Scholarships

After families have hosted an exchange student with AYA, they may be eligible for scholarships to study abroad on one of our study abroad programs:

AIFS College Study Abroad Scholarships

As a leader in study abroad, AIFS offers programs for American students to earn college credit while studying in an international environment. College students can choose from 27 locations for a summer, semester or year abroad. High school students who have completed their sophomore year can earn college credits overseas with Summer Advantage, at one of 7 prestigious universities.

American Council for International Studies (ACIS) Scholarships

If a year or a semester program does not fit what you are looking for, the American Council for International Studies (ACIS) trips may better suit your needs. ACIS, a division of AIFS, specializes in teacher-led short-term high school trips abroad. Students travel to Europe, China, Mexico, Africa, Australia and the Americas with teachers during school breaks. A great opportunity for your son or daughter to experience another culture. Encourage your school to consider a trip with ACIS.

By hosting an exchange student, it has given me the power to help with bridging the gap between our culture and others. It may seem small, but it has taught me that even just one person can make a difference.
