FLEX Hosting Guidelines

We ask that, as a FLEX host family, you assist your FLEX students in acheiving the goals of the program and encourage them to take advantage of the unique opportunities made available to them through the FLEX grant.

Student Support
Your FLEX Local Coordinator is specially trained to supervise students on the FLEX program and will meet regularly with both you and your student to ensure that your student is achieving the goals of the program. Students receive a small monthly stipend to cover some expenses, and funds are available for students to participate in activities that will expose them to democracy, volunteerism, free enterprise and the American way of life.

Volunteerism
FLEX students are required to volunteer a minimum of 5 hours per month in his/her community or school.

Some suggested ideas are:

  • Tutoring and mentoring children
  • Reading to the elderly
  • Working on fundraisers
  • Environmental protection and conservation
  • Serving meals to the homeless
  • Teaching English to immigrants

Unique and Exciting Opportunities for FLEX Students
FLEX students will have the opportunity to participate in several activities and competitions sponsored by the U.S. Department of State throughout the year.

Civic Education Workshop – Student essays are judged, and winners will attend a special one-week workshop in Washington, D.C., to learn firsthand about the U.S. democratic concepts, our structure and organization of government and other important issues. Students will participate in discussions, briefings and meetings on Capitol Hill.

State Department Sponsored Online Chats – Students will be able to participate in several scheduled online chats during the year with U.S. government officials.
